Eco-Friendly Diaper Service Coming Soon to East Nashville

Green mommies of Nashville, rejoice! A diaper service is headed your way.

Back when cloth diapers were the norm, diapers services were plentiful. The enterprising businesses would pick up a family's dirty cloth diapers and drop off fresh, clean diapers, saving time and preventing hassle for busy moms.

As disposable diapers took over the market, diaper services began to disappear. Why pay someone to clean your diapers when you could toss them in the trash?

However, cloth diapers are becoming in vogue once more as environmentally-minded parents are looking for diaper solutions that are gentle for the planet and for their babies. Diaper services, as well, are making a comeback, ready to rush to the aid of perplexed new parents.

To my knowledge, Nashville has lacked any access to diaper services during this current revival of cloth.

However, that is about to change with the coming of SmileMommy! Diaper Service. According the SmileMommy.com, the company hopes to open in a couple of months. Currently the founders are researching "the most efficient and ecologically friendly way to launder diapers for our future customers."

Thanks to these eco-friendly entrepreneurs for returning this needed service to Nashville!

Online retailer ghia introduces apparel from Avatar Imports

Coinciding with Fair Trade Month this October, online retailer ghia is excited to announce the addition of Avatar Imports to their selection of socially responsible clothing and gifts.

Featuring fair trade clothing and accessories made in Nepal, Avatar Imports provides beautiful clothing that is affordable and responsibly made.

"Apparel from Avatar Imports is a great fit for our site, helping further our mission of bringing socially responsible products to a far-reaching audience at a price-point that is easy on the pocketbook," says Christy Nicholson, ghia owner. "At ghia, we're excited to partner with a company that shows such dedication to fair wages, education, and quality-of-life in their manufacturing community."

Avatar Imports works with a small workshop in Kathmandu to create their apparel. In addition to ensuring that the manufacturing conditions are up to fair trade standards, Avatar is investing in the community through their support of a local orphanage, making a commitment to provide food and cooking supplies on a monthly basis.

According to Nicholson, one of the most popular Avatar items carried by ghia is a long patchwork skirt made of cotton pieces. "When customers see this skirt, they are drawn to it -- the workmanship is beautiful." Other highlights of the collection include cotton men's shirts that are great for workplace wear and kimono-style dresses that can be worn alone or over jeans for a casual yet elegant look.

Avatar Imports is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and CO-OP America.

ghia is an Nashville-based internet retail store offering jewelry, clothing, purses, and other items at www.shopghia.com. The store focuses on products that are socially responsible, including fair trade and locally made products. For more information, visit the Press Room at www.shopghia.com.

A Great Weekend

Our events this past weekend were very successful. Thanks to everybody who stopped by our booth!

I enjoyed being at the Farmer's Market. I took a break from working in the afternoon and explored the produce shed -- amazing! I love the smell of fresh veggies.

Interestingly enough, there was a tent city set up outside the market. Apparently, the Tennessee State Parks sponsored a bike ride across the state, and the event happened to start on the Bicentennial Mall this past Saturday.

On Sunday we were at the CRAFT event in East Nashville. There usually are new vendors at each event, and I love checking out the new products. One vendor featured fair trade baby clothes that she had hand-dyed. Awesome!

Our most popular products this weekend were the fair trade accessories from World Finds, like the coin purses and hair pins. The headscarves are getting a lot of attention as colder weather approaches.
